April 2009
Spring has officially arrived, even though there may still be snow on the ground. We ‘ll be outside for many more hours digging in the garden, sitting out on the deck and participating in the warm weather sports.
You know what I am going to say next: WEAR SUNSCREEN, PREFERABLY SUNBLOCK. We routinely recommend 50+ sunblock for the best protection. The sunblock will actually block the suns rays (by reflecting them) and sunscreen interacts with your skin to prevent your skin from absorbing the rays. Be aware that sunscreen needs to be applied 30 minutes before sun exposure. Sunblock on the other hand, gives immediate protection as soon as you apply the cream. Remember to apply both sunscreen and sunblock generously. We carry an excellent inexpensive Sunblock/Sunscreen line that is manufactured locally called Rocky Mountain Sunscreen either 30, 45 or 50+ SPF. Prices: $5 - $11.20 + tax - depending on size.
TANNING BOOTHS ARE A DEFINITE NO-NO!!!
Many people believe a few sessions to "give their skin color" in a tanning booth is preventative for getting a sunburn. This is not really true. It is estimated that black skin gives about 6 SPF protection - not really much protection. A light tan acquired in a tanning booth gives much less protection and exposes you to Ultaraviolet Light that is known to be a causative factor in skin cancer and skin aging. DON'T BE TEMPTED TO USE A TANNING BOOTH! Instead, to acquire some skin color we recommend you apply a sunless tanning cream or a spray tan.
