Your Skin Health:
If you have participated in a complimentary consultation with us, you have likely been warned about the dangers of Tanning Beds. The WHO (World Health Organization) has included tanning beds in their list of the most dangerous cancer-causing forms of radiation - this list also include radioactive plutonium and solar UV radiation. Most concerning is the popularity of UV tanning beds in the youth population. Studies show first exposure to tanning beds in youth increase melanoma risk by 75% (the most deadliest skin cancer). In addition tanning bed use increases the risk of Squamous Cell cancer by 2.5% and Basal Cell cancer by 1.5%!!
In March 2010 the FDA will consider upgrading Tanning Beds to Class II or Class III medical devices. Right now they are considered a Class I - in the same category as tongue depressors and elastic bandages. This will allow much more oversight and more regulations. It's about time!!!
Your Winter Face:
- Cheeks, Forehead and Chin - apply a nickel sized dollop of sunscreen of 15 + SPF 30 minutes before going outside. Re-apply two hours later.
- Lips - apply lip balm with a 15+ SPF to lips - especially the lower lip (the most vulnerable) - this will protect lips and also prevent chapping and peeling.
- Nose - apply an extra dollop of physical sunscreen (contains titanium dioxide or zinc oxide) to the nose. 30% of all facial basal cell cancers occur on the nose.
- Scalp and Neck - head, neck and scalp melanomas are twice as deadly as other melanomas! Wear protective. wide brimmed hats!
- Eyes - wear wrap around sunglasses that have 99-100% UVA and UVB blocking.
